Lyophilized storage: the -20°C rule

Freeze-dried peptides are stable for 24+ months at -20°C, and that is the storage standard for any vial you are not using this week. A household freezer compartment (2–8°C equivalent for short stretches) is acceptable for days, not months. Heat is the enemy: every 10°C increase roughly doubles degradation kinetics for most peptides, which is why cold-chain transit time is a sourcing variable — US-domestic stock that arrives in 3 days is materially fresher than international stock that spent three weeks in hot warehouses.

Why vials must reach room temperature before opening

A cold vial opened in humid air condenses water on the powder and glass — localized melting and hydrolysis before you ever add diluent. The working protocol: remove the vial from the freezer, leave it sealed until it reaches room temperature (30–60 minutes), then open. It is the single most-skipped step in peptide handling and the easiest to fix.

Reconstitution with bacteriostatic water

  • Use bacteriostatic water (0.9% benzyl alcohol preserved saline) — the preservative suppresses bacterial growth in multi-use vials.
  • Plain sterile water is for single-use dilution only; reconstituted peptides in plain water should be used immediately.

The mistakes that ruin vials

In order of frequency: storing lyophilized vials at room temperature “until needed”; shaking to dissolve; refreezing reconstituted solutions; using plain sterile water for a multi-week protocol; and leaving reconstituted vials at bench temperature between uses.
